Rain gear that keeps a ride going

Waterproof suits, overpants, gloves and covers that keep the wet out.

Rain gear is the cheapest way to double your riding season. A packable suit under the seat turns a cancelled ride into an ordinary one.

The failures are always in the same places: the waistband gap on two-piece suits, the cuff seal at the gloves, and untaped seams across the shoulders. Every pick here is judged on those three.

How to choose

Taped seams or nothing

A waterproof fabric with stitched, untaped seams leaks within an hour. Welded or taped construction is the single feature that separates a suit that works from one that only claims to.

Full-length leg zips

If you cannot get the pants on over your boots at a fuel stop in under a minute, you will not bother, and you will ride wet.

Seal the cuffs and neck

Water tracks up sleeves at speed. Elasticated inner cuffs plus a high storm collar keep it out; overgloves finish the job without carrying a second pair of gloves.

Keep the luggage dry too

A roll-top dry bag beats a rain cover that flaps loose at 120 km/h. Welded tail bags mean nothing inside needs its own plastic bag.

What your budget buys

Frequently asked questions

One-piece or two-piece rain suit?

One-piece suits never leak at the waist, which is the most common failure point. Two-piece suits are easier to get on and off at the roadside and let you wear just the jacket.

Do I need rain gear if my jacket is waterproof?

Often yes. Drop-liner jackets soak the outer shell before the membrane does its job, so the jacket gets heavy and cold even if you stay dry underneath. An over-layer keeps the shell dry too.

How do I stop my visor fogging in rain?

A Pinlock insert plus a hydrophobic visor treatment covers both problems: the insert stops the fog inside, the treatment blows the water off outside above about 40 km/h.
